Intersect - Doing Summer Together

Intersect: Doing Summer Together

The Guide to What’s What, When and Where

Welcome to the third summer of Intersect with our faith family at Hope! Each summer we learn a little more, explore a little more and grow a little more and summer 2019 is full of potential. We invite you, your friends, your neighbors, your kids, your grandparents and everyone in between to be a part of these service adventures! Perhaps you will find something a little outside your comfort zone and challenge yourself to reach or maybe you’re an experienced pro and you can bring your knowledge of serving others to bless and improve a project. Maybe you’ll discover new talents and interests, maybe you’ll get to have one of those “God-sighting” instants that fill your heart or you may simply plant seeds and simply trust God is doing things you can’t see. We’re glad you’re considering the invitation to do summer together—here’s what’s happening:

Worship

During the month of July we literally do worship TOGETHER! There’s only one service in July so whether you are an “early service person” or a “late service person” for this month we are all in one service together at 9:30 AM. Following the service we invite everyone, every age, every ability, to come to the gym and discover all the different service options for the day. Some are quick, some are long, inside, outside, physical labor or just writing a note—there’s something for anyone.

Collections

Throughout the month we have a few different charities that we are collecting for:

  • Camp Hope: Just outside of Houston, Camp Hope is a temporary living and rehabilitation facility for combat veterans. In their own words, “This is not a treatment program, but rather a peer coaching and support program whose primary purpose is helping combat veterans find healing, balance and positive re-integration with their families and in society. In addition, The Warrior Family Support Groups exist to assist family members (spouse, parent, sibling, child, caretaker, etc.) of PTSD sufferers in understanding and healing from.” During the month of July we will be collecting men’s socks, running shoes, toilet paper and men's boxers to donate to Camp Hope—this collection will be delivered along with cookies and quilts completed in our service projects.
  • Missionary Allen Dewberry: Last summer we reached out to support missionaries across the globe in China—in 2019 we will bring it closer to home with this missionary who is actively sharing the Gospel and nurturing disciples on college campuses in the College Station area. Allen also has a home connection with Hope—he is married to our long-time member, Erin (Hinga). Our collection for Allen will include Bibles and items for care packages to be given out to students on campus—snacks such as individual chips bags, cookie packs, fruit cups, cereal bars, candy, etc. as well as gift cards in small denominations ($5-$10) for fast food. Can we match at Thrivent grant of $250 and collect as much in gift cards? Challenge is on! Stop by the Missionary support project table to add notes of encouragement!
  • School Supplies: H.U.R.T. ministry is collecting school supplies for area children in need. Check out their list of items and drop off supplies throughout the month. These donations will be sorted at the end of the month—see that coordinated listing under Projects.

Projects

Quilts for Camp Hope / Quilts for Twin Bed Build: The Knotty Ladies have been busy preparing quilt tops and need your help with the next step in the process, tying! No experience is needed for this simple task of knotting threads to prevent the quilt from shifting as it is used to bring comfort and blessing to combat veterans navigating their next steps at Camp Hope. This is a very popular project each summer!

This project is scheduled July 7 & 14

Buddy Benches: Feeling left out or lonely on the playground? Have a seat on the “Buddy Bench” identified as just the place for that kind of moment—the idea is that soon, a buddy will join you on the bench and you can find something to do together! FISD has requested eight buddy benches for their school campuses—we already have one built—let’s see if we can knock out seven more!

This project is scheduled July 7 & 21

Missionary Support: College campuses can be lonely and intimidating, especially for students navigating a new place, new routines and, hopefully, new friendships. Missionary Allen Dewberry is seeking notes of encouragement he can hand out to students as they meet. Combined with our collection of Bibles and care package supplies, we want to send Allen to his mission field this fall well prepared. You can meet Allen at our Ministry Fair on June 30, stop by the table through the month of July to take just a few moments to write up a note he can share with someone needing a smile!

This project is scheduled for every Sunday in July—stop by on your way to another project!

Unpack Some Smiles Project: this group’s task is to unpack some smiles while helping this shut-in unpack some things still stored away from Harvey. Some simple housekeeping tasks and a shared lunch are an effort to give a hand up and lift a heart at the same time.

This project is scheduled July 7 & 14

Twin Bed Build: using simple construction techniques and breaking down the process, this project goal is five twin size beds to be ready for disaster response. Check the date listing below for the task you want to be a part of or come each Sunday listed to see it from start to finish!

July 14: Sanding and priming

July 21: Bed assembly

July 28: Painting

Meal prep for Family Promise: Hope regularly hosts Family Promise, a ministry to homeless families. Volunteers are always needed to prepare and evening meal and serve as overnight hosts during their stay here. This project invites you to prepare a meal for Sunday evening when the families first arrive—you are welcome to join the kitchen on Sunday morning and return Sunday evening to help serve the meal and share in welcoming our guests.

This project is scheduled for July 21

Set-up for Family Promise: this project is pretty quick when there are lots of hands to help! Set up beds and make them up with fresh linens and then place personal care kits to welcome our guests.

This project is scheduled for July 21

Choir for a Day!: Miss singing in choir? Want to give it a try? Can’t find the time in the regular season? Here is your chance! Join up with others to bring the gift of music into the community. Participants can be from about age 8 to 88. This project will have mini practices on Sunday, July 14 at 10:45 AM and/or Thursday, July 18 at 7:30 PM. Both will be held-please attend at least one. On Sunday, July 21 we will take our show on the road to an area nursing home or assisted living facility.

July Practices July 14 (10:45am)/July 18 (7:30pm)

On the road July 21

The Annual Art Project: Each year we look for something we can all contribute to and beautify our campus! This year’s project draws the most simple to the most gifted to paint tongue depressors—yep, that’s right! From simple solid sticks to intricate patterns or portraits—wait until you see what we are turning them into! Even the littlest Van Gough can add to this masterpiece—choose a Sunday to come and make your mark, we have 690 sticks to paint!

This project is available every Sunday in July

How Can We Help Outreach: Sometimes what a person needs most is simply a loving hand up. For this project we will work on a “honey-do” style list for an individual in the community needing some help. Bring your servant heart and perhaps a pair of work gloves!

This project is scheduled for July 14

Meal Prep for Mercy Tree: Mercy Tree is a ministry among and with the homeless in the Clear Lake area ensuring each day there is a hot meal and some time in God’s Word to share. Our Stephen Ministers plan to serve there on Monday, July 29 so we are prepping the meal in advance on July 28.

This project is scheduled for July 28

Cookies for Camp Hope: Since we are already delivering some love to Camp Hope we will add a batch of fresh cookies to the list! Come and help stir up a few batches of goodies and join the fellowship in the kitchen!

This project is scheduled for July 28

Gardening at Hope Village grab your work gloves and a spade to add some landscaping cheer to residents home 1 at this community gem—good chance you’ll have some helping hands among the villagers there and want to come back for more time together!

This project is scheduled for July 28th
